A little history of the M249:


The FN Minimi (Minimi meaning "mini-machine gun") is a Belgian-designed light machine gun designed by Ernest Vervier and manufactured by the FN Herstal since 1974.

Also known as M249 SAW (modified version for the US Army), it appears in many movies and video games. “SAW” is the acronym for Squad Automatic Weapon.

This submachine gun is chambered in 5.56 mm NATO, more specifically the “ss109” cartridge having been initially created for it. This 5.56 mm ammunition, normally used in assault rifles, is less powerful and therefore carries less distance than the ammunition generally used in medium submachine guns, but it is also less bulky and therefore allows you to have a weapon more mobile that can be operated by one man. In addition, it has a high rate of fire, which allows it to provide effective support, from a defensive and offensive point of view.

This gas-borrowed submachine gun was designed to support the FN MAG, not to replace it. In a combat section, there is usually one machine gun for general support (FN MAG, M60E4 or AAT 52) and two FN Minimi for support.

A version firing the 7.62 x 51 mm NATO cartridge was developed and is in particular in service with the French army and the New Zealand army.
