About the weapon:
The Bergmann Maschinenpistole 18 or Bergmann MP18, is a German machine pistol designed at the end of World War I.
It was the first "real" machine pistol to be used in combat in large quantities.
The firm produced about 10,000 in 1918, the number used in combat is estimated at 5,000.
The manufacture continued in 1919 and 1920.
From the observed serial numbers, it appears that 35 000 pieces were manufactured before the manufacturing license was transferred to SIG (Switzerland) which renamed it SIG Bergmann 1920.
The MP18 was specially designed for trench warfare, where a machine gun is too cumbersome and a rifle does not offer a sufficient rate of fire.
Unlike the Allies who developed machine guns, Browning Automatic Rifle, Lewis Mark I, CSRG 1915 Chauchat, the MP18 was designed to use handgun ammunition.
